Miles Davis Quartet - Musings Of Miles
Charlie Parker had just recently died (in March of 1955) and Miles Davis was in the process of forming his first classic quintet when he recorded this date. The trumpeter is featured on a quartet outing with celebrated bassist Oscar Pettiford (with whom Miles had already recorded for Blue Note in 1952 âthese were to be their last recordings together), pianist Red Garland, and drummer Philly Joe Jones (both of whom would also form part of the aforementioned quintet âwith John Coltrane on tenor sax and Paul Chambers on bass). The program consisted of four standards, a blues (âGreen Hazeâ), and the original tune âI didnâtâ, which was Milesâ humorous answer to Thelonious Monkâs âWell, You Neednâtâ. The interpretations are generally lyrical and melodic, and even âA Night in Tunisiaâ sounds a bit mellow. A version of âHow Deep Is the Ocean?â from Milesâ only other studio session with Oscar Pettiford (the aforementioned 1952 date) has been added here as a bonus. 180-gram VIRGIN VINYL LIMITED EDITION. The Complete Album + 1 Bonus Track. 1. Will You Still Be Mine? 2. I See Your Face Before Me 3. I Didnt 4. A Gal In Calico 5. A Night In Tunisia 6. Green Haze 7. How Deep is the Ocean?
